Highways/transport

Overview

Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are at the heart of the national transport network, enjoying an enviable geographical location with quick access to and from markets by road and rail and we continue to work with partners to further develop this connectivity.

Accessibility

We’re also committed to improving transport accessibility across North Staffordshire, with significant funding secured which enabled delivery of major projects such as the Etruria Valley Link Road and Newport Lane Link providing direct access to one of our major employment hubs.

It’s easy to get around the city in other ways. Our discounted fare scheme is keeping bus fares affordable and new routes and times are reconnecting communities, complementing the remarkably large network of traffic free blueways and greenways, pedestrian and cycle route links supporting healthy living, clean air and a net-zero carbon future.

Active travel

Switching between different types of transport is becoming easier through projects such as the one already underway around the city’s main rail hub – the beautiful, listed Victorian railway station – sitting at the heart of the Transforming Cities programme delivering an attractive transport interchange with much improved pedestrian, cycling and bus routes to the city centre.

This improvement of social mobility is helping our economy by creating better access to jobs, education and other key facilities for more and more people. It’s also good for the environment – giving people travel options and keeping our transport networks moving.

We’re committed to making even more improvements across our transport portfolio, such as a rolling out 1,100+ public EV charging points, real time bus passenger information systems, congestion busting measures and an improved bus interchange to create the best possible access to jobs in our 24/7 economy, road condition improvements and more to come with our £9.6m 2025/6 bus services grant.

Connectivity

We’re enhancing our delivery programme to promote better national rail connectivity and new local rail stations to the conurbation; developing a rapid bus transit network; capacity improvements at major highway junctions; and significant investment in highway maintenance. By continuing to secure funding and invest in our transport network we’re creating the perfect place to live, work and play.
